#TIFF 2013 Celebrities and the Causes They Support Part 2

In honour of the start of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), I began Part 1 of this series last week that I’m continuing today with the philanthropic efforts of the stars attending TIFF 2013. I have featured the charitable connection of the famous before in posts such as 10 Most Charitable Celebrities from the 2013 Oscar nominees, the top 20 Celebrity Gone Good Part 1 (and Part 2), the 5 Celebrity Charity Events by Musicians, the 10 Celebrities Doing Interesting Things to Change the World, the 10 most charitable celebrities, the 10 Celebrities Doing Good for Women and Girls, the 10 highest paid actresses and their causes as well as the 10 highest paid actors and their charities. Now, with the help of Look to the Stars we’re going to be spotlighting the charitable celebrities descending on Toronto this week.

• Amy Poehler

  Amy Poehler: The Parks and Recreation star and SNL alumni will be attending the festival for the world premiere of her film You Are Here. The star founded Smart Girls at the Party and has also supported  Artists for Peace and Justice, Autism Speaks, Rosie’s Place, The Trevor Project and Worldwide Orphans Foundation

• Glenn Close: The Oscar nominee will be attending the festival to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the 1983 film The Big Chill. Close is a co-founder of the charitable organization Bring Change 2 Mind which works to help support those suffering from mental illness. She has also been a supporter of Animal Rescue Foundation, ASPCA, Entertainment Industry Foundation, Friends of the High Line, Oceana, Peace Over Violence, St. Francis Food Pantries and Shelters, Sundance Institute, V-Day and Waterkeeper Alliance.
• Julia Roberts: Roberts will be coming to the Toronto festival for the world premiere of August: Osage County, the film adaption of Tracy Letts’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Roberts’ philanthropy is well known as she is a board member of the Hole in the Wall Gang organization. She has also supported Children’s Hospice & Palliative Care, Global Fund, Kids Wish Network, ONE Campaign, (RED), Red Cross, Shane’s Inspiration, Stand Up To Cancer and UNICEF.
• Nicolas Cage: The action star will be attending the North American premiere of his film Joe. He is known for his generosity as he donated $2 million dollars to aid in rehabilitation for child soldiers and $1 million to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. He has supported Amnesty International, Chrysalis, Hillsides, Oceana, Screen Actors Guild Foundation and The Art of Elysium.

Meryl Streep

• Meryl Streep: Streep will be joining co-star Julia Roberts for the world premiere of August: Osage County. The multi-Oscar winner has been a tireless champion of the National Women’s History Museum (NWHM) and even donated her Iron Lady salary to the cause. She has also supported: 10×10, Actors Fund of America, American Foundation for AIDS Research, Artists for Peace and Justice, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, Entertainment Industry Foundation, Equality Now, Healthy Child Healthy World, Heifer International, Prince’s Trust, Stand Up To Cancer, St. Francis Food Pantries and Shelters, The Rainforest Foundation and Women in the World Foundation.
• Alice Cooper: The iconic rocker will attend the festival for the world premiere of the documentary Supermensch The Legend of Shep Gordon. Alice Cooper is the president of Solid Rock, a nonprofit that works “to help meet the spiritual, economical, physical, and social needs of teenagers” in the Phoenix area. Cooper has also supported ANNIKA Foundation, Artists for Peace and Justice, A World Fit For Kids!, Casey Lee Ball Foundation, Celebrity Fight Night Foundation, GRAMMY Foundation, Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center, MusiCares, Prince’s Trust, Red Cross and Save The Music Foundation.
• Kate Winslet: The Oscar winner will be attending the world premiere of Labor Day. Just this past spring, she gave a speech at an event for homeless charity Cardboard Citizens in London. The Titanic star has also supported Afghanistan Relief Organization, beat, CHICKS, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Elton John AIDS Foundation, Golden Hat Foundation, Helen & Douglas House, Motion Picture and Television Fund Foundation, National Literacy Trust, Northampton Welfare Rights Advice Service and The Family Haven.
• Zac Efron: The former Disney star will once again be attending TIFF for the North American premiere of Parkland. He has been a supporter of American Humane Association, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Habitat For Humanity, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Mattel Children’s Hospital and Music for Relief.
• Colin Firth: It is the world premiere of The Railway Man, which brings the star to the festival. Firth supported his wife Livia’s Green Carpet Challenge in 2012 for stars to wear eco-fashions during the awards season. He has also worked with charities such as Amnesty International, Make Poverty History, Make Trade Fair, Out Of The Blue, Oxfam, Soil Association and Survival International.
• Jennifer Garner: She will be in Toronto for the world premiere of her film Dallas Buyers Club. She has been a supporter of Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, Alzheimer’s Association, A-T Children’s Project, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Children Mending Hearts, Clothes Off Our Back, Entertainment Industry Foundation, I Have a Dream Foundation, International Medical Corps, Make Poverty History, March Of Dimes, Milk+Bookies, National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Pediatric Epilepsy Project, (RED), Save the Children, Stand Up To Cancer and The Art of Elysium.
